The process of film

This part i want to show the plot: Because the little boy and his parents have different view of the world, they will have different emotions to in the same time. Maybe when they little boy is worried or be afraid of something, however his parents are happy. I want to use the emotions to show the difference strongly. I want to emphasize this to show the little boy’s grandfather is really meaningful to the little boy————this is a detail accumulation.

 Make the characters’ face be simple style. There are two main reasons.

First: I want to save more room, because the next part, the monster will appear. I want to leave enough room for them.

Second: Because the car is small, so i want to make a simple style just like playing a video game. I think this will make the film has a different feeling.

I make the car always in the same position, because this can save my time of drawing. I will only need to draw the things which passed the car. I add the automobile exhaust and speed lines to make the car have much more feelings of running. I think it looks  not bad, right?

Why i draw this action? Think about if i draw the actions like the before actions———— it will waste many time and at the same time there is a problem.

Look at the right picture, if the red wan to pass the blue. There are only two ways for me to choose. If i choose the NO. 1, the red and blue will overlap. If i choose NO.2, it is OK, but they are important part of this plot they will stay out the ‘safety frame’. i called the green frame ‘safety frame’.

So i use this way to draw the passing of different faces. It gives a fast feeling at the same time.

The process of film

 

The next part, i want to show the plot: the little boy and his parents have different view of the world. The little can see the monster, but his parents can not. At first, i have three ideas of layout.

The first one will have strong feelings of contrast, but maybe it is difficult to show the car’s moving. The second one is good to show the car’s moving, but how can i show which part is the little boy’s view and which part is the parents’ view. The third one also difficult to show the car’s moving and which part is the little boy’s view, which part is parents’ view.

Finally i choose the second part, because the second part for me is easy to draw and i can add the characters’ face on each part to show they comes from different view. Because the car is small in the picture, and i can not draw their face on the car’s window. I think about a lot. Oh, maybe i can draw the water. Different windows spill water, and the water changes into the characters’ face.

But when i am drawing , there is a new problem. If i draw like this, the design of characters have hat and hair, the room is not enough for their heads. So i change the plan again.

I make the above room of the picture bigger. And add the dotted line to link different parts to show different view. This is the final works.

About scenes—

Before i drawing the scenes, i have much hesitation. color? style? how to move?

About the style, i want to use pencil brush to draw. I asked Mario, do you think my scenes should be painted? Mario said,  Mario advised me if i have enough time, i can give colors on scenes. I think it is a sincerely advice. In the house, i begin to think about the clear style. I want to my scenes to have clear shapes and give the audience a feeling of naivety.

So i draw this—

But when i gave this picture to my classmates–Amber, Cecelia, Julia, they gave me bad remarks on the scenes. They have the same feeling that the scene of this picture is not clear. They mean it is difficult to distinguish foreground, medium ground and background.

I found they are right. It is a useful advice for me. But I don’t know how to change it and only change a little things on the picture.

They gave me an advice— maybe i can change different layer’s transparency. And i change it, it really works. However it lose my proper idea, it becomes a different feeling which i don’t want to have.

Luckily, i am doing the beginning, i have chance to change the scene and have enough courage to delete it and draw on a piece  of white paper.

Amber and Julia think the maybe i can draw the scenes when i need them. Like magic, the scenes can appear when the character need them.

Research of Cemetery

I have a plot: the car driving passed the cemetery. So i think i can use the time to research the cemetery. Cemetery often appear in the horrible film. Recently the topic of the zombie is hot, so the scene of cemetery often appear.

The above elements are  so common in the cemetery. I think maybe when you draw the cemetery, you do not need to draw the owls, you can add the owls’ sound effects to instead of drawing it, it will be better. The wildfire can combine with the ghosts, that can make the picture be more rich.

If i draw the tombstones, I will try to change their sizes and shapes of the tombstone to make them have many special feelings.

I really like the details of the tomb stone, i will add some details on my tomb stones to make the stone looks different.

 when the little boy throw away the stone, he can’t throw it directly. As the first picture shown, the boy show make his hands back and then throw it away. so NO.1 to NO.2 to NO.3.

But my classmate Amber who always have amazing and interesting ideas ask me, why i don’t make the hands turn like a wheel? I said, yes, it will be more interesting.

But i try many times, i don’t know how to draw the wheel in the high speed. Amber gives me many examples, and draws the pictures for me. I forgive to save them, next time i will remember.

Mario said, he thinks if the title push the boy will create an interaction between title and boy.

I think this suggestion will make my film better.

But when i am drawing, i meet some problems.

 

First, because my fault, i didn’t consider about the future’s modification. So i draw the title and characters on the same layer. So when i change the pictures which has title, i have to think about the changing of title.

Second, i think if the title push the character, the character also need the action of pushing.

So i choose to draw the push action after this picture. Because in the former work, after it is the title appearing.

So the action will be NO.1 to NO.2 to NO.3

Think about the plot again

Because i am boring, i mean i want to watch something not draw something. So i begin to search some interesting short films.

There are 4 short films i want to talk about. 1：Fallen Art 2004. 2：EI Empleo

After watching them, i begin to think, think about many many things. They make me to be peaceful and begin to think slowly. I have a little feeling of shame, i think my film which i am drawing now, maybe it doesn’t have a enough meaningful theme or a surprising ending. So i use a pen to write some words. I try to catch some important ideas from my head, and put them on the paper. After i find plan A, plan B, plan C, I find if you want to make your work better, you will change it endlessly . But i have the deadline, even in the future, my job or life will have time limits in different periods. So I change some small parts of my plot, and try to make the plot to be clear and rich. It is not a easy thing for me, beacuse it is only 3 minutes and i have to show one story clearly.

Now, the following 4 guys are the films which result in my hesitation.

Fallen Art 2004

This short film has a clear relationship between each characters. They just like the different parts of the machine, one people finishes one step and give it to the next person, and they become a circle— a funny lives circle. The soldiers’ death become one person’s creation of dancing film. One death is one frame. When the pictures change, the music of this dancing film appears. The blood likes flowers under them. I think after that cruel people stops dancing, his tears fall down from his eyes, but that is crocodile tears. The circle is not be stopped.

I think the film want to say something about the war. The first thing is war just like one person’s entertainment. The second thing is many people die for the honor, but the honor just for they having courage to face death. Final thing i think is even maybe they know what’s role they are playing in this circle, no one change their behaviors. Only need just one person, one person to say ‘No’ or do something differently, the circle will be changed. However, they all behave like robots. And they are used to doing these thing.

So after watching this film, i begin to watch it again and again, i want to find something the author want to tell me. Something in the film i still don’t understand. For example, why there is a frog? And why there is a clarinet on the desk?

If the film make you to think, it is a good film.

EI Empleo

I have to say that i have watched this film before. But i can’t understand the feeling of the film at that time. I am confused. Maybe i am too young. But now i can understand every people is the tool in the society. people do the different thing day and day, they are numb. What they do can’t make them happy.

After the subtitle, one person try to give up his role.

But the author don’t give the ending of him. So the ending is unsure.

These two films use his plot make people to associate with the real world around us. Make people begin to think about the things around us. They never say directly.

I think i should make my film like them, give the audience enough room to think. So i write a clear plot tree. It is a draft. I use chinese, because it is convenient for me to see, when i draw the plot.

My style, colors, and feeling of my film, and the progress of making.

when i open the software, i find a big problem.

The progress bar is too small, i can’t see each key frame. It will influence me to counting the pictures.

So i try to find how to make progress bar bigger.

I use chinese searching website. and find someone had the same question with me. And someone answer there is a “Z” near the progress bar. you press it and move it, the bar will be bigger. i try it and it works.

Today is my first school day after winter holiday,  i listen to the main work i will do this term by Mario. I think next term i should focus on finishing the film. In the afternoon, Pete talk to us one by one, talk about the work we submit to the teachers. He said, my film’s plot is not clear and my blog ( this website) is lack of research, and that makes my grade down. So sad. So this term i will make my website better.

In honestly, i have many novel ideas of my film’s every thing, such as colors, background, plot, style…. But just like what i said before, i want to finish my film. So i can’t change again. i should decide everything and do it.

If you want to learn from i think you can learn from the master. These two pictures come from famous Vincent Willem van Gogh. The first picture is called Wheatfield with Crows, the second picture is called Starry Night Over the Rhone. 

I want to make my colour have lives, even they are stationary. So i first people remind of is Van Gogh. His painting i don’t know why, they have lives, especially The Starry Night. So i want to try to find his drawing feeling.

 This is the brush feeling. i try to find this brush’s number on the Internet.  I find nothing on the Internet, so i have to change the brush number to find the close brush. Good luck to me.(smile)

 This is current color. The color be more colorful.

I add some bright colors.    

Because i draw each picture one by one, i try to make the colors look the same, but i also use my feeling to color, so there will have difference. I think it can also create a changing feeling.

Research of speed lines

I think the speed of lines is really needed in the animation. First, it can save the time, that means it can save the money of making the film. Second, it can also create an interesting actions in the plot which you draw one picture to another picture.

The speed line just like its name, it can make the audience feel the character’s speed or something’s speed is really fast and quick. You can easily find it in the comic books. Sometimes it should care about the  perspective effects.

Sometimes, we do not need to draw speed lines on the pictures. We can draw the speed lines on the characters’ outline. That can also be the speed lines. I think this kind of speed lines more difficult to draw and it will influence the feeling of the character itself deeply. If you draw it badly, that will be the feeling of sunshine. If the action is not big but it is fast, you can use this way to show the fast speed of the character’s actions.

If you master this skill, you can have a big improvement in comic and animation. That can make the audience feel the actions changing even there is only one picture.

At the same time, speed lines can be used to show the big and powerful scenes. For example, the bomb, the bomb of magic, the bomb of war, the bomb of experiment. But the speed lines should be much more and be close to each other. So, in this situation, the speed lines be the part of the scenes, and make the bomb be more powerful and terrible.

The speed lines also can be used to be the way of camera moving. When the speed lines come out in some moment, that can make you feel the camera is moving, but maybe it is not changing. So the is really interesting way to show the camera’s moving. If i have chance, i want to try using speed lines to change my camera. That can make the audience’s eyes pay attention to what i want them to pay attention to.

 

Research the monster which appears in my short film.

When i gave my short film’s idea to Amber (my classmate and friend), she said maybe she can give me a research choice. She gave me the link of the video.

Because in the plot, the monster in parents’ eyes is a tree. So i want to it be more like a tree’s shape. Amber thought i can research Japanese umbrella monster.

On this link, I found many useful information and the pictures gave me a lot of new ideas.

 

This is a short comic story, really warm and make people like the monster. The blue hair girl and the umbrella is the whole character. That means the blue hair girl is the umbrella monster, she always bring a terrible umbrella. She is Mischievous, she likes to make tricks on the people. When people be afraid of her umbrella she will be happy and proud. One day, she found a little boy, she went to afraid him, but he was not frightened. He just kept crying but not because of the umbrella monster. The little girl found the little boy lost his way home. The umbrella monster thought about herself, she was abandoned by her owner. She was sad about that. She thought the little boy must also be abandoned by his parents, so she decided to find the little boy’s parents and frighten them as a payback. In the end, the little boy found his parents, they didn’t abandon him, they were also look for him.

This setting is normal in the animation, the monster want to frighten the people, someday, the monster found one person do not frighten it. Then they have a story…

I really like this kind of story, especially that is for monsters and hum
an.

That makes me remind of the film Mischievous. That is the same setting. In this film, at first the monster use the children’s shouting to make power and in the end, this company uses children’s laughing to be their company’s power. Because they find the laughing has much more power than shouting. This setting’s change makes the movie have an improvement of the idea. Pleasure has much more power than frighten.

So i will give my monster this setting too. It likes trick but it is kind.

Skrik

This painting is really famous in the world. It named ‘Skrik’. It was drawn by Edvard Munch in 1893. There are 4 editions of this painting. The painting shows the Volcano eruption. Because the eruption of Volcano, the sky be red. The flowing colors in the painting , the character’s twisted face, the people’s dark clothes and the main character using his hands to cover his face… All of these things make the painting have a strong feeling of fear. So i use this emotion to be the little boy’s emotion of fear.  I think this painting give people a feeling of it is moving, it looks like a short film. The people can feel the fear clearly by this painting.

I search its history and the painter’s background on the Internet. I find this painter likes using some negative emotions and make the emotion be stronger. I think maybe  because Skrik had a not good childhood. His family is not happy. His parents died early when he was a child. He is a representative figure of expressionism. Expressionism was a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas.
